Operations yesterday…..

Yesterday we made it down to our usual railfan spot to catch some more Penn Central action. As usual we saw old standby 5628 doing the honors, today switching out Armitage Furniture, Paxton-Sullivan scrap, the team track , and Stephen’s Grocery Distributor. Photos of all the action are below. As we ran out of time, we did notice two more boxcars left on the main near the yard office, an inbound car for Armitage and an inbound car for the team track. I’ll cover switching them out next time, plus switching P&G!

Nighttime railfan….

Being a railfan at night brings a different perspective and experience. Everything seems to sound different at night, from the crickets chirping to the sound of a 567 prime mover idling away. Railroads run at all hours bringing its own experience and challenges at night.

I recommend….!

If you haven’t visited the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley, Colorado, I highly recommend you put it on your bucket list of museums to see. Not only will you see a world class 5,000+ square foot model railroad run by volunteers, but also a lot of railroad memorabilia plus the last wooden caboose used in Colorado by the C&S! As a volunteer there myself, it’s a must see with special event days throughout the year. Btw, I also made the latest museum newsletter about the first Colorado Rail Prototype Meet! Link here to the museum: Colorado Model Railroad Museum

Railfan action yesterday….

Yesterday we went trackside for awhile to catch some PC action. Old 5628 was sure busy yesterday, switching out the now empty coil car from the team track, switching out tank cars at P&G, and spotting a PC boxcar loaded with paints and stains for Armitage Furniture, now spotted on the team track while the industry crew finishes loading the Cotton Belt boxcar with furniture. 5628 also spotted a TASD boxcar at the team track dock loaded with an unknown commodity for a customer. Photos below of all the action!

More backdrop….

Coming soon to fill these two blank spots around the layout will be another backdrop from Realistic Backgrounds. One will do, which I’ll cut to fit:

Unusual load/ car today….

A very unusual car and load spotted on the team track today! This P&LE coil car with steel coils. Apparently a local steel fabricator has a big contract and had this car delivered. It now awaits closing down Canal Street so as to get a crane truck and flatbed truck in to unload!

A little detail….

To continue with adding more details these were added today to the scrapyard siding. Both the derail and signage are from MacRail. The derail sign is a decal that came with the derails. I simply applied it to a scale milepost!

The nitty-gritty….

Several days ago I had a follower make a comment that my layout looked dirty and gritty. I thanked him as this was and is my intent! From a run down scrapyard office with peeling paint on the walls, to weeds, to gritty industrial scenes, to rusted freight cars , to rusted discarded autos, I think I’ve achieved at least some of that look!

New addition….

Yesterday saw a new addition arrive for the Cincinnati Terminal Sub, specifically for Paxton-Sullivan scrapyard, this Brownhoist industrial rail crane. I weathered it up a bit, clipped the big hook off and replaced it with a rusted magnet for loading gondolas. An excellent model and much needed edition to the layout!

Operations yesterday…..

Yesterday at lunchtime I was able to get down around St Bernard to see some Penn Central action. First I was able to snap a photo just as the crew was onboard GP7 5628 at their yard office in Ivorydale yard as shown below:

Next, we caught the crew spotting an Illinois Terminal gon into the scrapyard seen below:

Next up we saw the crew spotting an ex-St Lawrence Railroad boxcar into a track at P&G, we assumed to be loaded with some type of finished product:

Finally, before our time ran out, we watched the crew spotting a Cotton Belt boxcar on the team track to be spotted later at Armitage Furniture:

A huge thank you....!

Just a shout out to all those looking at this website for my layout for the fact it just turned over 10,000 views yesterday! So a BIG thank...
