Why the Penn Central?…..

I’ve had several modelers and followers on my other media ask me why I model the Penn Central? Even today, some railfans love either the Pennsylvania Railroad or the New York Central, or New Haven but hate the PC.

There are several reasons why I chose to model Penn Central. One reason is my grandparents in Ohio lived between two major yards of the PC, so when we visited, I’d hightail it down to either yard and hang out. Another railroad that ran close to their house was the B&O Toledo division, so I was able to watch their trains as well.

Later on in 1982 I started working as a brakeman/conductor on the Indiana & Ohio Railroad out of Mason, Ohio, working on ex-Penn Central trackage, several times filling in on their Blue Ash sub, which was also ex-PC, ex-CL&N trackage. My last year at the railroad I switched from train service to the track department training as a track inspector, thereby gaining more experience on ex-NYC, ex-PC trackage in SE Indiana.

Finally, one other reason I model PC is that they ran anything and everything, from SW1’s to GGI’s, so I could take my pick at what to run. So there you have it, why I picked the Penn Central!
